Course Aim:

Accidents and ill health can ruin lives and affect businesses. There is no such thing as a risk free workplace but threats to health and safety can be minimised. Risk Assessment is an essential part of the planning stage of any health and safety management system. It is also a legal requirement within the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999. Delegates will develop knowledge and skills to enable them to carry out risk assessments.

The course is suitable for people who are relatively new to risk assessment but may have a need to carry them out. It would also be suitable for those who act in a supervisory or management role and need to be aware of their responsibilities in relation to risk assessments being carried out.

Course Objectives:

• To list the legal aspects of risk assessment.
• Understand and be aware of their responsibilities.
• To explain the difference between hazards and risks.
• Explore how to evaluate the risk level and the use of control measures.
• Understand the uses of safe systems of work and permits to work.
• Demonstrate an ability to carry our risk assessments.

• Types of risk assessment quantitative & qualitative
• Basic definitions
• The risk assessment process and the five steps to risk assessment
• Identification of hazards and risk evaluation

• Special cases of those ‘more at risk’
• Principles of control
• Safe systems of work
• Permits to work
• Case study and project
